A good watermelon will sound hollow when thumped, right? Not entirely true say the experts. So, instead of knocking on the melons in the grocery store, here are a few tips that may help instead:
- Good watermelons will have a shiny rind and a gold spot. The gold spot is the underside of the melon where it rested on the ground. A stark white spot indicates an underripe melon.
- A good watermelon will feel heavy for its size.
- Check the stem. If you watermelon still has a stem, it should be hard and green if the watermelon is good. A watermelon with a brown stem could mean the watermelon is past its prime.
